One Killed in Earthquake in SW China Province
A woman farmer was killed and over 130 others injured in an earthquake in Yongsheng County, southwest China's Yunnan Province, Saturday.
Liu Tingxing, head of the county, said rescuers are searching for more casualties from the temblor, which measured 6.0 on the Richter Scale.
The quake's epicenter was at 26.14 degrees north latitude and 100.34 degrees east longitude, according to Yunnan Seismological Station.
In addition, over 1,500 buildings in Taoyuan Village in the epicenter have collapsed.
About six villages in a neighboring county were affected by the quake.
Rescue teams have been dispatched to the quake-hit areas. Local officials were investigating the disaster situation.
Yongsheng County, which is 600 kilometers northwest of Kunming, capital of Yunnan, belongs to Lijiang Prefecture.
Lijiang ancient town, about 100 kilometers from the epicenter, has been inscribed on the World Heritage List by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1997.
"The earthquake did not bring any damage to the ancient buildings in Lijiang," said Xi Lihong, an official of Lijiang.
