Chinese, Korean, Japanese Buddhists Pray for World Peace
Nearly 400 senior monks and nuns with about 1,000 Buddhist followers from China, the Republic of Korea (ROK), and Japan held a grand ceremony Saturday morning in the Lingguang Monastery western suburbs of Beijing to pray for world peace.
The gathering was presided over by Master Sheng Hui, vice- president of the Buddhist Association of China (BAC). Monks and nuns from Chinese mainland, ROK, Japan, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan prayed for the world peace and the friendship between China, ROK and Japan.
Master Sheng Hui told Xinhua that Buddhism is a religion that teaches peace, sympathy and love for all living things.
He said the assembly was aimed to zero in on the goodness in the human heart and pray for everlasting world peace.
Buddhist leaders from ROK and Japan praised the event, saying they valued the close ties between Buddhist circles of China, ROK and Japan.
ROK will host a similar prayer assembly next year.
China is a country with many religions, with Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Protestantism, and Catholicism being the major ones.
Buddhism was brought to China around the first century A.D. and later spread to Korea and Japan. China has about 13,000 Buddhist temples and monasteries.
