Phnom Penh Marks 567th Anniversary of Becoming Cambodian Capital
The Municipality of Phnom Penh Saturday held a celebration marking the 567th anniversary of making Phnom Penh the capital of Cambodia.
The city of Phnom Penh was founded as the capital of Cambodia on October 27, 1434, when the country's capital was moved to Phnom Penh from Santuk district, Kongpong Cham province.
Addressing the celebration at Wat Phnom that is the origin of Phnom Penh, Phnom Penh Governor Chea Sphara said the move of Cambodia's capital to Phnom Penh is of historic significance, and that the city of Phnom Penh has been called "the Pear of Asia" under the leadership of King Norodom Sihanouk, then the Head of State of Cambodia before 1970.
He said the municipal government has planned to construct the ancient capital into an international metropolis, making it an important tourist city in the country featuring "smile to all visitors from all over the world."
