President Mugabe Inaugurates Sino-Zimbabwe Cement Plant

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe on Friday officially inaugurated the Sino-Zimbabwe Cement plant in Gweru, about 300 kilometers south of Harare.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mugabe disclosed that at present, the plant has a production capacity of 700 tons of cement per day and it is expected to achieve full capacity by January 2002 when it will produce 900 tons per day.

He also said that the project has created employment for 215 permanent and 109 contract workers.

Under a joint venture agreement between Zimbabwe's Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and the China Building Material Industrial Corporation for Foreign Economic-Technical Corporation (CBMIC) in June 1994, the cement plant was completed in September 2000 with a total cost of 51 million U.S. dollars.

Among those present at the opening ceremony were Zimbabwean Minister of Industry and International Trade Herbert Murerwa, Minister of Finance and Economic Development Simba Makoni and Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Hou Quingru.
