Twelve people were killed and at least 10 seriously injured when their minibus careered off a mountain road in east China's Zhejiang Province, state media reported Friday.

The minibus was carrying 22 passengers from Qing'an to Ningbo, 200 kilometres (125 miles) south of Shanghai, when it span out of control and plunged off the side of the mountain, Xinhua news agency said, citing local police.

Five passengers died instantly and more than 10, including the driver, were seriously injured and rushed to hospital. The death toll late Friday had risen to 12, Xinhua said.

The accident occurred about 30 kilometers from Xinchang county, which is 80 kilometres southwest of Ningbo.

Police were investigating the cause of the accident.

Some 71,000 people were killed in road accidents in China in the first nine months of this year, official figures said Friday.

A further 422,000 people were injured, with economic losses caused by the crashes totalling 2.3 billion yuan (280 million dollars), according to Ministry of Public Security traffic bureau figures cited in the Beijing Evening News.
