China Re-elected into UN Economic, Social Council
China Friday was re-elected into the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) with a majority of votes, and will be the ECOSOC member for the next three years beginning from 2002.
After the election outcome was announced, Wang Yingfan, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, told reporters that the result clearly shows that most of UN member states support China's continuous contributions to international economic and social affairs.
"This is the affirmation of China's important role in the ECOSOC and the United Nations," he said, adding that China will continue to work together with other ECOSOC members to promote economic and social affairs in the world.
China has been an ECOSOC member ever since its resumption of the legal seat at the United Nations in 1971, and has been making great contributions to the UN work in such fields as economy, human rights, women's affairs, environment and social development, he said.
The election outcome was announced by the president of 56th General Assembly session, Han Seung-soo of South Korea, after a secret ballot.
ECOSOC, one of the six principal organs in the United Nations, has 54 members, who serve for three-year terms.
