Pentagon admits Bombing Red Cross warehouses, residential area
The Pentagon admitted on Friday that U.S. warplanes "inadvertently" bombed warehouses used by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the Afghan capital of Kabul and a residential area near them.
Two U.S. Navy planes each dropped one 2,000-pound (900 kg) bomb on the warehouses on Thursday evening, the U.S. Central Command said in a statement.
And a 500-pound (220 kg) bomb "inadvertently" hit a residential area about 700 feet (230 meters) south of the warehouses, apparently because its guidance system malfunctioned, the command said.
It was the second time since the U.S.-led bombing campaign against Afghanistan began on October 7 that U.S. warplanes mistakenly bombed ICRC warehouses in Kabul.
