Mubarak, Bush Mull Mideast Situation Over Phone
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Friday held phone talks with his U.S. counterpart George W. Bush on the latest developments in the Middle East.
During the conversation initiated by Bush, the two leaders exchanged views on the deteriorating situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, the state-run MENA news agency reported.
Bush said that Washington will continue its efforts to help end the dangerous situation in the territories and prompt the Israeli government to withdraw its troops from Palestinian-ruled areas.
Mubarak called on the U.S. and the international community as a whole to take serious measures to calm down the situation and halt the cycle of the Israeli-Palestinian violence, stressing the need to ease the tension to guarantee peace and stability in the region.
More than 10 Palestinians were killed in the Israeli incursion into the Palestinian village of Beit Reema on Wednesday, a move as part of an unprecedented military operation in retaliation for the assassination of Israeli Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze'evi on October 17.
