U.S. Halves Field of 2012 Hopefuls to Four Cities

Four candidates were wiped out with another four remaining in the field to bid for the 2012 Olympic Games by the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) in Salt Lake City on Friday.

By halving the field to Houston, New York City, San Francisco and Washington, the USOC will make its final choice in November 2002 and the International Olympic Committee will chose the Olympic host in 2005.

Those eliminated U.S. cities are Cincinnati, Dallas, Tampa and Los Angeles, which held the Olympics twice with the last edition in 1984.

However, the U.S. had been considered a long shot to get the 2012 Olympics because the upcoming Salt Lake City Games will be the fourth time since 1980 the Games have been in the United States.
