International Folk Art Troupes Perform in BeijingFour specially selected performances were staged in Beijing Friday as part of the ongoing 5th International Folk Arts Festival, which started October 12.Four art troupes -- the Folk Dance Ensemble of the Egyptian Academy of Arts, the National Folk Dance Company JOC of Moldova, the Drum Band of the Russian Army, and the State Ensemble of Song and Dance of the Mongolian Army, gave the Chinese audience a taste of unique native styles. The Egyptian troupe performed the "Pharaoh Dance" and the " Dance of the Orient", and the Mongolian troupe gave a show of traditional and contemporary folk dances which reflect the bravery of its army and the physical beauty of the Mongolian people. The festival, sponsored by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles (CFLAC), invited a total of 19 troupes with more than 400 artists from China and 17 other countries and regions. The troupes also performed in Hangzhou, east China's Zhejiang Province, and Xi'an, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, holding various kinds of activities with the local people. CFLAC also invited some of the troupes to present the best pieces in their repertoires in Beijing. The folk arts gala has been held four times since 1990, with 59 folk troupes from 31 countries attending. A total of 1,400 artists have so far performed in China for as many as 1.2 million Chinese viewers.
