Ancient Bazaar Listed as World Architectural Heritage Site
The World Monuments Fund, an international fund for the protection of world heritage sites, announced in Beijing Friday that the ruins of an ancient bazaar in Shaxi Town in Jianchuan County, southwest China's Yunnan Province, has been added to the 2002 list of internationally significant sites.
A special certificate was issued today by the fund to the government of Jianchuan, where 90 percent of the population is of the Bai minority.
With intact theaters, inns, temples and gates, the bazaar is the only well-preserved example of its kind along a famous ancient tea trade route that connects the region with Tibet and southeast Asia.
The local government has taken measures to protect the spot.
