Thai Army: Armory Explosion Caused by Accident

The Royal Thai Army (RTA) released an official announcement on army armory explosion Friday afternoon, saying that one people was confirmed dead, 16 people were reported missing and believed killed, and five people were seriously injured in the tragedy.

In a fax to Xinhua, the RTA announced that the explosions occurred in the Fifth Arsenal of the Army Ordnance Department in Pak Chong district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, had caused damages in eight ammunition depots, residential and army unit's buildings nearby.

From the preliminary investigation, the explosion was caused by an accident during the removal of expired explosives which were collected from army units at the border area for destruction, the RTA said.

The explosion was an accident not being involved with other causes, the announcement stressed.

The RTA also announced that the situation had been under controlled and Lieutenant General Sirichai Thunyasiri, deputy chief of staff of the RTA, was appointed as the chairman of the Investigation Committee to examine the cause of this incident.
