Forty-six Officials Punished for Two Coal Mine Accidents

A total of 46 officials found responsible for gas explosion accidents in two coal mines have been punished, sources with the state coal mine safety supervision bureau said Friday.

A gas explosion took place in the Muchonggou Coal Mine in Guizhou Province, southwest China, on September 27, 2000, claimed 162 lives, left 37 injured and caused 12.27 million yuan of direct economic losses.

Another gas explosion in the No. 2 Dayan Mine in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, north China, on November 25, 2000, killed 51, injured 12 and caused 2.77 million yuan of direct economic losses.

Entrusted by the State Council, the bureau gave these officials administrative punishments such as degradation and disciplinary warnings.

Liu Changgui, a vice-governor of Guizhou in charge of production safety in the province, was ordered to submit a written self-criticism to the State Council.
