US Jets Launch Intense Attacks Against Afghan Capital

US jets repeatedly launched intense attacks against targets in the Afghan capital late Thursday, and strong detonations shook buildings in the center of the city, reports reaching here said. It was the heaviest attack in Kabul in days.

About 10 waves of aircraft thundered overhead starting about 11 p.m. and persisting after midnight. The planes dropped a large number of bombs near the airport, the center, the north and the west of the city.

Taliban gunners returned fire, and mobile anti-aircraft weapons could be heard moving about the darkened streets.
