Ethiopia Vows to Commit Peace Accord With Eritrea

Ethiopian Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin said Thursday that his country would remain committed to the scrupulous implementation of the Algiers agreement in order to seek a lasting peace for the Ethio-Eritrean border disputes.

"Ethiopia has so far shown maximum restraint and would also exert utmost efforts to seek the success of the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE)", said Seyoum at a meeting with resident diplomats in Ethiopia.

He noted that the UNMEE at present was facing difficulties on the ground as the other party remains intransigent and fail to honor the provisions stated in the signed peace accord.

"Generalization of accusation equally and squarely of both parties of not comply with the Algiers implementation of agreement is unfair," added the minister citing by the Ethiopian News Agency.

Meanwhile, a diplomat disclosed that the Ethiopian government would free some 20 sick Eritrean POWs in the coming days.

Earlier, Legwaila Joseph Legwaila, special representative of the United Nations Secretary General, called on the Ethiopian government to resume and expedite the unconditional release and return of POWs.

The International Committee of the Red Cross had registered and was visiting some 2,600 Eritrean POWs in Ethiopia and some 1,000 Ethiopian POWs in Eritrea.

The devastating two-year war between Ethiopia and Eritrea had cost massive human lives and severely damaged the economies of the two countries.
