16 Fishermen Missing in Sea off Hainan Island

Sixteen fishermen are still missing after their fishing boat reported October 21 it had suffered a leak in the sea 60 miles southeast off Hainan Island, according to the Hainan provincial maritime bureau.

The bureau's search and rescue center was informed on the morning of October 22 that the fishing ship experienced mechanical problems mid-afternoon on October 21, and the ship began to leak seawater.

The center promptly launched a rescue operation, asking nearby ships to search for the fishing boat and offer help, bureau sources said.

At 10:50 on October 22, one ship arrived on the scene, followed by more salvage ships and military ships, but heavy rain and gale winds stopped them from finding the boat.

The search and rescue operation is still underway.
