Doctor Bombs Bus to Kill Wife

A Linyi doctor confessed Wednesday to setting off a deadly bus explosion in an effort to kill his wife, police said.

Li Qiang, 31, was arrested in the city in East China's Shandong Province and charged.

Three people died and scores were injured in the blast. The man's wife lost her legs in the incident and is in critical condition at a local hospital.

The city bus exploded on Sunday as it passed through town, witnesses said.

One person died at the scene, and two others died later that day after efforts to save them in a hospital failed.

Li, a doctor at the city's No 3 People's Hospital, admitted he put a homemade clock bomb into his wife's bag about 20 minutes before the blast. It exploded while she rode the bus.

More than 50 passengers also were on the bus. Passengers of another city bus, which was nearby, were also hurt.

The injured were rushed to a group of local hospitals, with the most severe victims taken to the No 146 Hospital of the People's Liberation Army. Some of the most badly injured people remained in critical condition there Wednesday, doctors said.

Passengers with more mild injuries were sent to the People's Hospital. Most suffered from temporary deafness and ringing ears, medical specialists said.

A woman who is six-month pregnant was among the injured, the Nanfang City News reported Wednesday.
