China to Speed Up Modern Distribution Industry

China wants to create a sound environment to accommodate the country's rapid development in the distribution sector, a senior official said Wednesday at a seminar in east China.

Yu Guangzhou, vice minister in charge of the State Development Planning Commission, said that modern distribution was a major way, aside from reduction of material consumption and improvement of labor productivity, for enterprises to make more money.

These remarks were made at an international symposium highlighting modern distribution and economic development held in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province.

Speeding up the development of modern distribution can promote the reform of enterprises, optimize resources, boost transportation, improve storage and modernize business operation, Yu said.

Statistics reveal that modern distribution is turning into a new growth point in China's economy. Some cities like Shanghai in the east have already labeled the sector as their pillar industry.

Compared with developed countries, there is still a lot to be done in China's distribution sector, Yu said.

China needs to make better use of its current facilities by boosting the connection of distribution with other relevant sectors like the procurement, manufacturing, transportation, storage, processing and sales, Yu said.

After the country's WTO entry, China is sure to face more challenges in its tertiary industry, he said.
