Mubarak Calls for End of US Military Actions in Afghanistan Soon

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak Wednesday called on the United States to end its military strikes against Afghanistan "as soon as possible," warning that the longer the military actions last, the wider the gap between the U.S. and the Arab countries will become.

Mubarak made the appeal at a news conference after talks with Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel at Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh, the state-run MENA news agency reported.

The Egyptian president expressed the hope that the U.S. would do their utmost to keep its military strikes "as short as possible," adding that "it is very important for us."

For his part, Schuessel said that only terrorists should be targeted in the U.S.-led operations, while calling for limiting the current anti-terrorism war to Afghanistan.

"It is important to fight the terrorists like Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaeda network on the basis of their crimes and the proof against them, and to attack the places in which they are hiding in Afghanistan," Schuessel said.

Schuessel, who arrived in Egypt Tuesday for a two-day visit, has travelled on to Tehran for an official visit to Iran.

The U.S. and Britain started on October 7 daily air strikes against Afghan's ruling Taliban and bases of bin Laden's al-Qaeda network, which are held responsible for the devastating September 11 terror attacks in the U.S. which claimed several thousands of lives.
