FBI Director Says No Anthrax Links With Hijackings
US FBI Director Robert Mueller said Wednesday that there is no evidence that the anthrax outbreak was linked to the September 11 hijacking attacks on New York and Washington.
"At this point it is not clear if the few confirmed anthrax exposures were motivated by organized terrorism," Mueller said at the U.S. Conference of Mayors. "But these attacks were clearly meant to terrorize a country already on the edge."
He said that more than 7,000 FBI personnel are conducting the investigations into the September 11 terrorist attacks and the anthrax.
The Justice Department released three anthrax-tainted letters Tuesday, calling for the public to help identify those responsible for the mail attacks that have killed three people and possibly infected more than a dozen others. A total of 44 people have tested positive for exposure to anthrax in the country.
