French, German Leaders Hold Informal Meeting in Paris

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and French President Jacques Chirac Wednesday evening started an informal diner meeting on war in Afghanistan and Mideast conflicts at Hotel of Marigny, an annex building of L' Elysee, French presidential palace.

French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin and Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine and German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer joined the diner that started at about 2000 local time (1800 GMT).

It is the fifth French-German informal meeting since January 2001 when the process was launched following a meeting of this kind at French village of Blaesheim with all participants agreeing to meet in this format every six to eight weeks to discuss the main European, international and bilateral issues.

The second diner was held on March 20 in Herxheim-Hayna, in southwestern Germany, the third in Paris on May 11 and the fourth in Berlin on September 5.

A joint press conference will be given following the fifth one, prepared by Vedrine and Fischer when they met in Munich on October 15.
