China Sees First Bulk Export of Deluxe Wagons

October 20 saw a queue of 50 Buick wagons for business travel driven onto a cargo ship bound for the Philippines, marking China's first bulk export of deluxe cars.

Sales for the Buick wagon had surpassed 15,000 by the end of last September since it was opened to domestic market in April, 2000, says Chen Hong, general manager of Shanghai GM. This time the Philippine Company of GM ordered 5,000 ten-seated business wagons of which 50 have been dispatched and the rest would be delivered in the coming five years.

Facing WTO challenges, China's automakers have been gathering up vital strength by using the remaining few years of "soft landing". The successful bulk export of Shanghai GM marks its first step forward in a long development strategy.
