European Commission Launches a Euro Info-Campaign in China

The European Chamber of Commerce held a forum Tuesday, which began a nationwide information campaign to introduce the euro to the Chinese public.

After more than 10 years of preparation, 12 European countries are giving up their national currencies and adopting a new common currency: the euro. Euro will finally "become part of the European identity of all euro area citizens," said Herve Carre, director for monetary affairs of the European Commission at the forum.

Although on January 1, 2002, the last phase of the changeover to the euro will begin as Belgium, Germany, Greece, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal and Finland start introducing euro coins and banknotes, many Chinese still have insufficient knowledge about the new currency, according to the European Commission Delegation in Beijing.

The delegation has felt it urgent to launch a wide euro information campaign in China, which will include numerous activities varying from conferences and seminars to exhibitions, media events and a "road-show" covering all provincial capitals, said Carre.

Vice President of the European Central Bank Christian Noyer and other European experts will participate in the campaign, aiming to help Chinese citizens to gain a better understanding of the currency revolution in Europe, said Carre.
