Drill to Test Emergency Reaction

The biggest air-raid demonstration drill in years is scheduled for next month in this capital of East China's Fujian Province, according to today's China Daily.

All government offices, businesses and related organizations will be involved so they are aware of how to respond to such an emergency, the local media reported.

Acting Mayor Lian Zhixuan confirmed preparations are on track for the activity. But the exact date, the number of people to be involved and equipment to be used were not disclosed.

Lian said the goal is to test the system and make sure the government can function amid such an onslaught as well as to prove the capabilities of the nation's defence forces.

Fuzhou's location on the coast enhances its danger and the magnitude of a possible attack.

Similar exercises took place last year in Shanghai, the nation's biggest city and the country's economic centre.

But Fuzhou, perched along the coast, will shoulder a heavy responsibility for defending the country against air raids.

Air-raid drills are a normal practice in many countries and regions to increase public preparedness for a possible war.
