1st Contract Signed to Build Infrastructure for HK Disneyland Project

A works contract to provide the infrastructure facilities in Penny's Bay for the development of Hong Kong Disneyland Phase One was signed here Monday.

The contract, worth 2.08 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 270 million U.S. dollars), was signed between the Civil Engineering Department (CED and the contractor, China State Construction Engineering Corporation. Works will be completed in April 2005.

Works under the contract include construction of a 2.7 kilometer-long road, a 1.8 km long resort road, a sewerage network, a stormwater drainage system, water supply systems and a part of public water recreation center with a lake of about 12 hectares.

Also included are dredging and reclamation works for the formation of about 10 hectares of land and hard and soft landscape works of landscape berms, road side planting and about 10 hectares of woodland planting.

The CED said the soft and hard landscaping would complement the overall infrastructural works to achieve a quality standard for the entire Penny's Bay development in a coherent and environment- friendly manner.

More than 7 million plants would be planted at a cost of 200 million Hong Kong dollars (25.6 U.S. dollars).

The CED also said that the contract would create at least 1,500 job opportunities and the majority of the new jobs are expected to be filled by local personnel.
