Defense Chief Says U.S. Hits Taliban Troops North of Kabul

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Monday that American military warplanes have begun hitting Taliban and al-Qaida forces in northern Afghanistan, including Taliban troops in north of Kabul.

"It's true, the United States has been engaged in various air activities" to target such forces north of the Afghan capital, Rumsfeld said at a press briefing at Pentagon.

However, Rumsfeld denied Taliban reports that U.S. warplanes had struck a hospital near Herat, killing 100.

Earlier, Taliban Ambassador to Pakistan Abudul Salam Zaeef said in Islamabad that more than 100 people had been killed when U.S. warplanes bombed a hospital in the western Afghan city of Herat.
