World Bank Loans Help Poor in GuizhouA World Bank-aided poverty- relief program is progressing well in southwest China's Guizhou Province, according to a senior WB expert who is on a inspection tour here.Cheong Chup Lim said the smooth progress of the program will help the province win the fourth rural area development program for the western regions of China, which will start in 2003. The program, which has been extended to the end of June 2002, covers education, health, labor export, infrastructure, land development and other programs, involving 820,000 people in 13 key poverty-stricken counties. Over the past six years, the program has helped increase local farmers' per capita annual net income to 1,300 yuan (about 157 U.S. dollars) from 700 yuan in 1995. |
