Beijing to Use Money Wisely for Olympic Construction

Beijing will use its money wisely in the construction of venues for the 2008 Olympic Games, Liu Qi, mayor of the Chinese capital pledged Tuesday.

Speaking to representatives of the Hong Kong industrial and commercial circle on the fifth Beijing-Hong Kong Seminar on Business and Trade, Mayor Liu Qi emphasized that the facilities must be multi-functional so they can be used for other purposes after the Games end.

Liu said there was a lot to learn from other countries' experiences in the mammoth construction of the Olympic venues.

No donations from Beijing citizens will be accepted for the building work, Liu reiterated.

According to Liu Jingmin, vice mayor of the city who is in charge of the Olympic preparation work, Beijing wants to present the best Olympic Games possible in 2008 while also pushing forward the city's economic development.

To best the funding and avoid redundant construction, Beijing has decided to invite public bidding for its construction projects and will strictly follow international standards.
