Toray to Boost Textile Production in China

Toray Industries Inc., Japan's largest maker of synthetic fibers, said Tuesday it plans to build a new plant in Nantong, Jiangsu Province to expand production of polyester filament and nylon filament fabrics in China.

Construction of the plant, which will cost some 8 billion yen (65.3 million dollars), will start next month, Toray said in a news release.

The plant is expected to go into operation in two phases, the first in January 2003 and the second in September 2004, the firm said.

At full capacity, the plant will be able to produce 3.0 million meters of polyester filament fabric per month and 2 million meters of nylon filament fabric per month.

Toray said it decided to build the new plant on an expected surge in demand for high-quality apparel products in the US and European markets after China's entry into the World Trade Organization.

The plant will be run by Toray Sakai Weaving & Dyeing (Nantong) Co., a joint venture set up by Toray and major Japanese textile dye maker Sakai Ovex Co., according to Toray.
