West Lake Expo 2001 Opens in Hangzhou

The West Lake Expo 2001, an exposition with a 72-year history, opened in the capital of east China's Zhejiang Province Saturday evening.

A gala opening ceremony was staged to extend a warm welcome to some 20,000 guests from here and overseas.

According to the organizing committee the 22-day exposition consists of 46 exhibitions, workshops and programs featuring tourism, education, culture, art and economic development,

A similar exposition was held 72 years ago in the city, which is known as "oriental Geneva" because of the beautiful West Lake.

The "West Lake Expo 1929," the first of its kind in China, exhibited some 147,600 products from all over the world, making it equal to the then world renowned expositions "Chicago Expo 1893," "Paris Expo 1900" and "Philadelphia Expo 1927."
