Letter to New York Times in Brazil Test Negative

A white powder found in a letter sent to the Rio de Janeiro office of the New York Times tested negative for anthrax bacteria, Brazilian Health Minister Jose Serra said Saturday, contradicting earlier television reports.

The Times had said earlier Friday that the suspect letter handed over to Brazilian authorities was found containing anthrax bacteria.

Serra also asked Brazilian people to remain calm while making the statement.

Argentine health authorities confirmed Friday that a letter sent from Miami to a unnamed woman in Buenos Aires was laced with anthrax spores but they believed she was not at risk of becoming infected.
