4th Academic Conference of Young Scientists Opens in Beijing

The 4th Academic Conference of Young Scientists, sponsored by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), opened here Saturday.

According to the organizers, the conference, with the theme " technological advance and the development of high-tech industries", is aimed at encouraging academic exchange and technological cooperation among young scientists from here and abroad.

More than 600 participants, including 130 experts from 10 foreign countries as well as Hong Kong and Macao will exchange views and offer suggestions on major issues concerning the development of science and technology, the economy, and society in China.

World experts gave lectures and arranged six workshops for specific discussions, introducing two new topics namely "China's Entry into World Trade Organization" and "Nanometer Technology".

Zhou Guangzhao, chairman of the CAST and also vice chairman of the standing committee of the National People's Congress of China, expressed the hope that young Chinese scientists would concentrate on their research with "devotion, innovation, pragmatism and cooperation ",in order to meet opportunities and challenges brought by the new century.

The CAST has hosted the conference in 1992,1995 and 1998.
