Chief of PLA General Staff Meets British Chief of Air Staff

Fu Quanyou, chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) met here Saturday with the visiting Chief of Air Staff of Britain, Peter Squire.

Fu, also member of China's Central Military Commission, said that China and Britain have maintained fruitful cooperation in politics, economics and trade, and in scientific, technological and cultural fields since the two countries established diplomatic ties.

China attaches importance to developing relations with Britain and is willing to further cooperation with Britain, based on principles of mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefits. Fu said.

Speaking of anti-terrorism, Fu said that terrorism has posed a serious threat to world peace and stability and has become a global scourge. China has always opposed terrorism in any form, and supports the relevant resolutions made by the United Nations (

UN) and its Security Council as well as anti-terrorism campaigns.

He stressed that to combat terrorism one should have concrete targets and avoid hurting innocent civilians. Joint efforts should be made to combat terrorism and the role of the UN should be strengthened. Any activities should conform to the long-term interest of world peace and stability.

Fu also briefed Squire on China's current situation, national defense policy and development of armed forces.

He reiterated China's standpoint on the Taiwan issue, saying that the PLA is confident and determined to protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Squire said that the high-level exchange between the two countries' armed forces has been heightened in recent years, and the two countries are playing increasingly important roles in the world. As permanent members of the UN Security Council, Britain and China hold responsibility to contribute to regional and world peace and stability.

He pointed out that the British government appreciates China's standpoint on the issue of anti-terrorism and values China's anti- terrorism determination to combat terrorism without hurting innocent civilians.

General Liu Shunyao, commander of the PLA Air Force, was present at the meeting.
