Largest Container Port on Yangtze Starts Construction

China has started construction of the largest transfer station for containers on Yangtze River, China's longest waterway, in Longtan, Nanjing, east China's Jiangsu Province.

Located in the lower reaches of the river, Longtan is 35 kilometers away from the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge. Some 8,600 meters of the coast is able to meet the standard of deep water for a port.

Three berths each with a capacity of 25,000 tons and two for 1, 000 tons will be built. The annual cargo handling volume is estimated as 520,000 twenty-feet equivalent units (TEU).

The project, involving 1.089 billion yuan (131 million U.S. dollars), is expected to be completed in three years.
