Bush Meets Mahathir

U.S. President George W. Bush met Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad here on Saturday, assuring Malaysia that the United States is trying to avoid civilian casualties in its military campaign against the Afghan Taliban forces.

Emerging from the meeting, Bush told reporters that Mahathir is concerned about the death of innocent people in Afghanistan. "I assure him I am, too," Bush said.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 9th informal meeting of leaders from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation ( APEC), which opens here Saturday and ends on Sunday.

The Taliban has been accused by the United States of harboring Osama bin Laden, Washington's prime suspect in the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, which killed several thousands of people.
