Philippine Kidnappers Release Chinese Hostage

Chinese national Zhang Zhongyi was released by his captors in the southern Philippines on Saturday after more than two months of abduction.

The Chinese Embassy in Manila said Zhang had been release in North Cotabato province late Friday night due to the effort of the Philippine government and the military.

Zhang was kidnapped with Edwin Lim, his interpreter and another two Chinese workers on August 12 when they managed to rescue Zhang Zhongqiang, the elder brother of Zhang Zhongyi abducted on June 20 by the same kidnap-for-ransom group.

The Zhang's are engineers at an irrigation project on the southern island of Mindanao. The project will benefit thousands of Muslim in the region when it is finished.

Zhang Zhongqiang and one of his co-workers were shot dead during a gun battle between their captors and the government troops on August 19, while another co-worker managed to escape.

Lim was release on September 26 safely.
