Chinese Scientists Arrive in Svalbad Islands

A Chinese scientific expedition arrived at Svalbad, the capital of Svalbad Islands, Friday at 3:15 a.m. local time.

The team will build China's first scientific research station in the Arctic designed to accommodate a three-year comprehensive program on climate, environment and resources in the Arctic region.

The 17-member team, consisting of scientists and journalists, left Beijing Tuesday and entered the North Pole area early Wednesday morning.
