Unilever to Expand Business in China

Europe-based daily necessities maker Unilever will strive to localize its business in China by fully tapping the rich materials and human resources in the country, said a senior manager quoted by the daily newspaper Wen Hui Bao Friday.

The Asia-Pacific region is one of the most important markets of the company, said Jeff Sraser who is in charge of Unilever's business in Asia.

The Asia-Pacific sales of Unilever exceeded 7.5 billion U.S. dollars last year, accounting for 17 percent of its global sales, said Sraser, now in Shanghai attending the CEO Summit of the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).

Asia-Pacific market in the future, he said.

Unilever has set up nearly 20 joint ventures and solely-funded enterprises in China, with a total investment of more than 800 million U.S. dollars.

Sraser said in the next few years, Unilever will have opportunities in two major aspects in China as the country's resources and technological assistance will make its products very competitive in the world market. China's in-depth study into natural plants, as has been done in the field of traditional Chinese medicine, will provide favorable conditions for Unilever's effort to develop more cosmetics and health products.
