China Has Higher Cardiovascular Disease Mortality RatesDeaths from cardiovascular disease made up 40 percent of the total deaths in China in recent years, higher than in Japan, the United States and some European countries, Health News reports.Only one third of people over 35 years of age in Beijing and Shanghai, two leading cities in China, have normal blood pressure. The serum cholesterol level of male residents in Beijing rose 27 percent on average over the past 15 years while that of females increased 25 percent. Chinese medical experts attributed it to the aging population and a nationally high incidence of cardiovascular disease among senior citizens. Official statistics show, China has 132 million people aged 60 or above, accounting for 10 percent of its total population. This percentage is expected to rise to 26 percent by 2040. |
