Deposed Mayor Accepts Sentence for BriberyMu Suixin, former mayor of this capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve by a local court recently.Mu was tried in mid-August this year on charges of accepting nearly eight million yuan (nearly one million U.S. dollars) in bribes and not being able to identify the sources of some 2.7 million yuan (over 320,000 U.S. dollars). The Intermediate People's Court of Dalian, a port city in the province, issued a final judgment on October 10 that Mu had taken 6.61 million yuan (nearly 800,000 U.S. dollars) in bribes. Mu told his lawyer several days later after the sentence that he would not appeal the judgment. Mu was expelled from the Communist Party of China (CPC) and dismissed from government employment in mid-June because of the corruption charges. Ten senior officials implicated in Mu's corruption case have been expelled from the CPC and removed from their positions, the CPC Liaoning Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection (LPCDI) and the Provincial Supervision Department revealed recently. |
