Russian Official Praises China's Role in APEC

A senior Russian official in charge of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) affairs Tuesday spoke highly of China's contributions to the healthy and stable development of the forum.

Through hosting this year's APEC meetings, China has shown the world its vigorous economy and strong potentials for further development, said Sergei Vasilyev, executive secretary of the Russian Governmental Commission on APEC Issues, in a Xinhua interview.

Vasilyev said that with the deepening of its reform and opening drives and its increasing national strength, China is expected to play an increasingly important role in the global economy.

Vasilyev said he was impressed by the skyscrapers in the Pudong New District as well as the optimism and confidence shown by the common people on the streets.

He also expressed Russia's admiration for China's contributions to the progress made by the APEC in various aspects.

The Russian senior official said that his country has maintained a sound cooperative relationship with China, and that the two nations share identical positions on many issues.

He added that China's economic success has attracted worldwide attention and that Russia is willing to draw on China's experience.

Vasilyev gave a high score to the preparatory work for this year's APEC senior official meeting.

He said that Russia will enhance its cooperation with China and make its own contributions to the common prosperity of the two countries and other APEC member economies.
