Supervision of TV Commercials to Be Stressed

China will strengthen its supervision on TV commercials in an effort to curb false advertisements of drugs, medical apparatus and instruments and medical services.

The State Administration for Industry and Commerce made the announcement recently after monitoring advertisements on 43 channels of the China Central Television Station (CCTV) and 30 provincial television stations on July 28, Tuesday's China Daily reported.

Over 1,600 drug commercials, or 34.8 percent of the total drug commercials inspected, were suspected of violating China's relevant advertisement laws and regulations and defined as "false advertisements", according to the newspaper.

Nearly 54 percent of the medical apparatus advertisements and more than 78 percent of the medical services commercials were also charged with the same violation.

The television advertisements in China have been surging with the rapid development of its entertainment business and television industry. But a barrage of fabricated advertisements overwhelm viewers daily, the newspaper said.

Larger stations like CCTV and Beijing Television Station are not the major offenders, but some smaller stations have a worse record of performance.
