Li Peng Meets Yemeni GuestsLi Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), met Tuesday with the Speaker of the Consultative Council of Yemen (CCY) Abdul-Ghani and his party.Li said though geographically far apart as the two countries are, the friendship between their peoples dates back to ancient times. Since China and Yemen forged diplomatic relations 45 years ago, the situations in both nations and the world have changed a great deal. However, their traditional friendship has remained unaffected, and their friendly cooperation has been constantly developed and has withstood the test of time, Li said. Li said that with joint efforts from both sides, the two nations have conducted fruitful cooperation in politics, trade and economics, military affairs, education and public health. Sharing the same or similar views concerning many significant international issues, China and Yemen have always supported and cooperated with each other in the international arena, Li noted, saying that China is grateful for Yemen's adherence to the one-China position and its support to China over such issues as human rights. China cherishes its traditional friendship with Yemen and attaches great importance to bilateral cooperation, Li stressed. Li said communication between the two parliaments make up an important part of bilateral relations, adding that China's NPC is ready to further exchanges and cooperation with Yemen in all fields so as to benefit the two peoples. Ghani said Yemen and China boast strong bilateral ties, and the Yemeni people are grateful to the Chinese people for their support and help. He reiterated that Yemen supports China's reunification and regards the development of relations with China as one of the cornerstones of its diplomatic policy. Ghani congratulated China on its rapid economic progress and its achievements in science and technology, and expressed wishes to further expand friendly cooperation with China in all spheres. Ghani invited Li to visit Yemen at a convenient time, and Li accepted the invitation.
