Top Chinese Legislator Meets Botswana Parliament Speaker

Top Chinese Legislator Meets Botswana Parliament Speaker
Top Chinese Legislator Li Peng said that the Chinese side is ready to conduct close cooperation with African countries and push forward the further development of Sino-African friendship and cooperation.

Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), made these remarks Tuesday afternoon in a meeting with the Speaker of the National Assembly of Botswana (NAB) Matlapeng Molomo, and his party.

Li expressed his appreciation for Molomo's efforts in the past for the development of friendship and cooperation between the two countries and the two parliaments.

He said that China and Botswana enjoy a long-term friendship and since the two countries forged diplomatic ties over 20 years ago, bilateral friendship has remained the same and bilateral friendly and cooperative relations have witnessed a sound, sustained and steady progress although there have been drastic changes in the international and their domestic situations.

The two countries have always supported each other and maintained good cooperation in international affairs, added Li.

China has been delighted to see that Botswana, since it gained independence 35 years ago, has made great achievements in economic construction and national development, and is playing an increasingly important role in international affairs, noted Li.

He said he appreciates Botswana's support for China's reunification and on the human rights issue, and its consistent stance on the "one China" policy.

Li pointed to China's independent foreign policy of peace, saying that China holds that all countries, big or small, strong or weak, are equal members of the international community.

China has always attached importance to Africa and is keen on establishing a new type of long-term, stable, equal and reciprocal partnership with Africa, stressed Li.

He cited the positive results of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum held here in October last year.

Pointing out that the development of the China-Botswana friendship and cooperation is in the fundamental interests of the two peoples, he said the NPC will conduct cooperation with the NAB to promote bilateral friendship and cooperation.

Li also briefed the visitors on the NPC Standing Committee and China's domestic situation.

Molomo said that since the two countries set up diplomatic ties in 1975, they have maintained friendly relations and good cooperation in many fields.

He thanked China for its support and assistance to Botswana in the past, and said he hopes that bilateral cooperation in various fields will be furthered.

Molomo also briefed Li on the NAB.
