APEC Meetings Offer Praying Room for Muslims

The Chinese hosts of the ongoing Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2001 meetings have prepared a praying room for Muslims at the Shanghai International Media Center.

Sources with the organizers said this is the first time a praying room is prepared for Muslims according to Islamic rituals for international conferences hosted by the east China city.

The room in a quiet corner of the bustling media center is marked "Praying Room" on its door. Exact hours for prayers in October are given in a timetable written in both Chinese and Arabic.

The room is about 10 square meters in size and floored with a green carpet.

The two dark green cushions in the room are directed towards the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, according to an imam with the Shanghai Pudong Mosque.
