APEC Meetings Offer Praying Room for Muslims
The Chinese hosts of the ongoing Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2001 meetings have prepared a praying room for Muslims at the
Shanghai
International Media Center.
Sources with the organizers said this is the first time a praying room is prepared for Muslims according to Islamic rituals for international conferences hosted by the east China city.
The room in a quiet corner of the bustling media center is marked "Praying Room" on its door. Exact hours for prayers in October are given in a timetable written in both Chinese and Arabic.
The room is about 10 square meters in size and floored with a green carpet.
The two dark green cushions in the room are directed towards the holy city of Mecca in
Saudi Arab
ia, according to an imam with the Shanghai Pudong Mosque.
