China Calls for Strengthened International Cooperation Against Drug

China on Monday reiterated its call for international communities to strengthen cooperation against drug and drug-related crimes.

Addressing the third committee of the 56th UN General Assembly on international drug control, Counselor Xie Bohua of the Chinese Delegation said that drug-related crimes are globalized social problems deserving more attention and efforts from the international community.

"In order to combat the production of and trafficking in illicit drugs and to reduce demand for them, for a long time the international community has actively taken measures and achieved encouraging results," he said.

"However," he warned, "the trend is that the cultivation, production and consumption of illicit drugs are spreading and developing."

Taking illicit drugs as a social as well as a global problem, he urged timely counter measures from the international community to combat drug-related crimes.

"Relaying on social strengthen, resorting to legal, administrative, economic and educational means, and adopting a holistic approach are all effective ways to solve the problem of illicit drugs," he said.
