Experts: China Shaping Unique Sustainable Growth Pattern

A sustainable growth pattern that bears unique Chinese characteristics is taking shape in the world's most populous country, which is confronted with worrisome environmental problems, experts of the 2nd China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED) said Monday.

The group from CCICED -- a think tank for the Chinese government -- noted that the government's attitude towards environment problems has changed considerably in the years since the council was founded in 1992.

The environmental issues have been given high priority in the government's economic policy decision-making process, said Zhang Kunmin, secretary general of the CCICED.

The country has carried out several nationwide projects to protect natural forests, grassland and farm land while making efforts to reduce industrial pollution.

The Chinese government has decided to fund the CCICED with 10 million yuan, according to Leonard M. Good, vice chairman of the CCICED and president of Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

The taking effect of the Kyoto Protocol will bring China good opportunities to attract foreign investment and advanced technologies to aid its environmental protection efforts, they added.

Experts also urged the Chinese government to evaluate the environmental impact of its macro economic policy. And the working group on sustainable agriculture under the CCICED suggested that research and evaluation be carried out as soon as possible on the application of bio-technologies including gene modification.
