China Able to Produce More Large Equipment: Official

China can now manufacture more large equipment instead of importing it from foreign countries, Zhang Guobao, vice minister of the State Development Planning Commission, said here Sunday at the on-going Third China International Hi-tech Fair.

China has made a large number of urban traffic facilities, high- voltage power transmission systems, hi-tech ships and environmental protection equipment, which have functioned well and helped save a large amount in foreign exchange, Zhang said.

As many as 13 Chinese cities whose population each exceeds three million are planning to build subways or light railways, which is expected to need a total investment of 115 billion yuan ( about 14 billion U.S. dollars) and almost 2,000 home-made trains,

according to Zhang.

As China will transmit power from its west to its east on a large-scale, a great number of home-made 500,000-volt direct-current power transmission systems will be put into use.

China is now planing to develop more large equipment such as large steam turbines and ship crankshafts, Zhang added.
