Britain Plays Support Role in Attacks on Afghanistan

British military forces were on Saturday involved in a supporting role during the sixth night of the United States-led air strikes on Afghanistan.

"British forces are taking part in a support role of coalition activities," a Ministry of Defense spokesman said, without giving any further details.

Reports in London said eight powerful explosions were heard on Saturday night around Afghanistan's capital Kabul and at least one bomb was dropped on the city's airport.

On the first night of attacks against Afghanistan's Taliban rulers and followers of Osama bin Laden last Sunday, British submarines fired Tomahawk cruise missiles to the Afghanistan targets.

But since then Britain has never directly involved in the attacks and only assumed a supporting role to the American bombers by providing air-to-air refueling tankers and photo-reconnaissance aircraft.
