Guangdong Scores Slight Increase in Foreign Trade

South China's Guangdong Province imported and exported a total of US$112.13 billion worth of goods in the first eight months of the year, up three percent from the same period of last year.

The foreign trade volume accounted for 33.9 percent of the country's total, said sources from local customs.

In the breakdown, exports totaled US$59.74 billion, of which, US$33.96 billion worth of exports were from overseas-financed businesses in the province.

From January to August, the province also imported US$52.39 billion worth of commodities. The imports were mainly in the processing trade.

As one of the country's leading foreign trade players, Guangdong has also been affected by the sluggish world economy since the beginning of the year.

Yet, there are some encouraging changes to note, said the customs sources. In the past eight months, Guangdong saw big increases in the export of machinery and electronic products, high- tech commodities, but experienced varying decreases in the export of traditional labor intensive commodities such as textiles, footwear, toys, plastic products and furniture.
